CASS clarinet competition

Entrants must be aged 19 or under on 31st December 2016.

Competition open to UK nationals or non-UK students in full time education and resident in the UK 


1st Prize - An Uebel Advantage A Clarinet
2nd Prize - Products from Vandoren
3rd Prize - printed music up to the value of £100 from Wiener Urtext



  • Round 1 - Tape Submission
  • Round 2 and Final - Live public rounds on 30th October at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London as part of the CASS Fortieth Anniversary Single Reed Day 


To enter this competition participants are requested to submit an Audio recording of two own choice contrasting pieces of no more than 8 minutes in length with or without piano.

Recordings can be submitted online via soundcloud or mp3, or posted by CD, together with a completed entry form detailing chosen repertoire for Round 2 and the Final.
All participants are asked to prove their age by sending a copy of their passport or birth certificate.

An accompanist will be available on the day. Rehearsals will be limited to a short play immediately before allocated competition times. Participants are welcome to bring their own accompanist at their own expense. An entrance fee of £20 by cheque made payable to CASS GB should be sent with your entry. This fee will also include one year's free student membership to CASS.

CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES 15th September 2016.

Shortlisted candidates will be notified by email, by 1st October 2016.
The judges decision is final and we will be unable to give feedback to those who don’t progress through to the next rounds.

Recorded submission:

15 minutes of mixed repertoire from the following list (can include movements of), to include one solo work.

Gerald Finzi- Five Bagatelles
William Hurlstone - Four Characteristic pieces
Joseph Horovitz - Sonatina
John McCabe - Three pieces
Paul Reade - Victorian Kitchen Garden Suite
Charles V. Stanford - Three Intermezzi
Vaughan Williams - 6 Studies on English Folk Song

Unaccompanied works:

Malcolm Arnold - Fantasy
Richard Rodney Bennett - Sonatina
Paul Harvey - Three studies on Themes of Gershwin
James MacMillan - From Galloway
James Rae - any study on any grade 6 and above list from 40 Modern Studies
Edwin Roxburgh - Wordsworth Minitures

Final Round:

Maximum 20 minutes
First or last Movement from Mozart Concerto (Bflat or A clarinet),
Weber Concerto 1 or 2
Weber Concertino (Complete).

Plus a selection of works from round 2 including one solo item. You may include works performed in round 2.
