CASSGB is delighted to announce a new Online Clarinet & Saxophone Competition for full-time students studying in the UK, aged 18 or over on 1 May 2021. There are separate categories for both clarinet and saxophone, each with their own cash prizes for the top three performers on each instrument.

While the pandemic has been challenging for musicians of all ages and abilities, it has been particularly tough for students – the usual cycle of lessons, classes, rehearsals, ensembles and concerts either cancelled or partly moved online for over 12 months.

With few performance opportunities or auditions in sight until lockdown restrictions ease, it is hoped this new competition will provide students with a practice goal to work towards over the next few months, as well as offering valuable experience of filming and submitting a video performance.

The competition is open to UK nationals and international students studying full-time in the UK. Entrants must be aged 18 or over on 1 May 2021.

CASSGB members and non-members may apply. Entry is free for current members. For non-members there is an entry fee of £10 which includes a one-year subscription to CASSGB (the normal cost of student membership is £12). Before submitting a video and completed application form, non-members should join online using the coupon code: 2021COMP

Entrants are asked to submit a video recording of two contrasting pieces lasting no more than 12 minutes. Repertoire can be solo or accompanied – any accompanied works may also be performed without the accompaniment, or alternatively with a backing track or other pre-recorded accompaniment.

The two pieces do not have to be performed continuously but must be submitted as one video file. Aside from an edit in between the two pieces, the performances themselves should not be edited.

Either or both pieces can be performed on any size clarinet or saxophone (alto, tenor, bass clarinet, etc). Applicants who play both clarinet and saxophone may enter both competitions but will need to submit two separate videos and application forms.

Video submissions can be recorded on any device and in any location – a studio, practice room, living room, kitchen, student halls, outside – wherever it is possible under your nation’s current lockdown restrictions

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three performances in both clarinet and saxophone categories (six prize winners in total):

1st Prize – £300
2nd Prize – £200
3rd Prize – £100

Judging panels for both categories will comprise of CASSGB presidents and vice-presidents, with a pre-selection process by the board of directors if required, depending on the number of entries.

How to submit:

Entrants should send a completed application form and a download link of the video recording to membership@cassgb.org.

Please do not email the recordings as file attachments. Download links can be from any of the widely available file transfer website such as Dropbox or WeTransfer.

Alternatively, files can be sent by post on a memory stick or CD to: CASSGB Membership Secretary, 23 Hanbury Close, Ingleby Barwick, Stockton on Tees, TS17 0UQ
