CASSGB Young Saxophone Soloist Competition

Entrants must be aged 19 or under on 12th January 2020

Competition open to UK nationals or non-UK students in full time education and resident in the UK

Prizes:

1st Prize - £1500 + invitation to perform at 2020 CASS Single Reed Day
2nd Prize - £1000
3rd Prize - £500

Requirements:

  • Round 1 - Recorded submission
  • Round 2 (final) - A maximum of six players will be selected to perform on 12th January, 2020 in London at the Craxton StudiosNW3 7SU

The competition is open to members and non-members. For non-members there is a fee of £10 which will include a one year subscription to CASSGB (the normal cost of membership is £12).

Round 1:

CASSGB has commissioned Charlotte Harding to write an unaccompanied saxophone piece as a compulsory test piece for the first round of the competition. The piece is called Solstice and can be downloaded below. Solstice should form part of a recorded submission (maximum 10 minutes). Additional own choice repertoire may be for any saxophone and can be accompanied or unaccompanied.

Recordings should be made as MP3 or WAV files. A download link to your recordings should be emailed (along with application form) to : membership@cassgb.org

Please do not email the recordings as file attachments.

Download links can be from any of the widely available file transfer website such as Dropbox or www.wetransfer.com

Alternatively files can be sent by post (on memory stick or CD) to:

CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES : 15th October 2019

  • Successful candidates who have progressed to the final will be notified by email, by 1st November.
  • The judges decision is final and we will be unable to give feedback to those who are not selected
  • Competition finalists will be asked to prove their age by sending a copy of their passport or birth certificate
  • Note that CASSGB is able to offer travel grants to competition finalists living outside London.


Round 2:

Successful candidates who have been selected to play in the final should perform a recital of not more than 15 minutes. The programme should not include the set piece Solstice but may include your previously submitted own choice piece(s) from Round 1. Again the repertoire may be for any saxophone and can be accompanied or unaccompanied. An official accompanist will be available if required and you should indicate if you wish to use the official accompanist if you are successful in progressing to the final. A 45 minute rehearsal will be available to all finalists on the day of the competition. A copy of the music should be made available for the adjudicators.
