Saxophones at the CASS Single Reed Day

This article was posted on 10 Oct 2016.

The CASS Single Reed Day on 30th October features a wide variety of concerts, talks, masterclasses for the saxophone enthusiast.

Recitals for saxophone and piano will be given by Kyle Horch and Jess Gillam. Kyle's recital consists of just the one piece: David Amram's Greenwich Village Portraits, a suite in three movements. Jess who appears at the CASS Single Reed Day after her success in being the first saxophonist to progress to the BBC Young Musician of the Year finals, will present a typically eclectic and varied programme. She will be playing music by Chick Corea, Ravel, de Rose, Marcello, as well as the fiery Phil Woods Sonata that she played so brilliantly at YMOTY. Jess will appear once again in the evening Gala concert playing another of her YMOTY pieces; the Pequena Czardas by Pedro Itturalde.

Rob Buckland will give a fascinating talk on the subject of "Mastering the machine – thoughts and discussion on understanding how the saxophone actually works, and how to learn to control it". Rob will return to perform as a soloist in the evening Gala Concert where he will play the Paul Harvey Concerto for Soprano Saxophone.

Trinity College of Music exam consultant Jeffery Wilson will be giving a talk on "The use of improvisation in teaching and examinations", whilst CASS President Richard Ingham will be running a saxophone masterclass for young players.

The Marici Saxophone Quartet bring their customary flair to the day's events with a programme of Piazzolla, Rodney Bennett, Colombier, and Simmons. Moving up in scale, the students from the Guildhall Saxophone Ensemble directed by Christian Forshaw will explore the rich sound world of a larger saxophone ensemble utilising the complete family of different sized saxophones.

The winner of the saxophone composition prize has already been announced, and we congratulate the winner, Lilly Vadaneaux. You can hear her winning composition for saxophone and piano played in the evening Gala Concert by Rob Buckland and Fiachra Garvey.

Tickets are still available for the CASS Single Reed Day. Do not miss out on the opportunity to hear such a glittering array of the country's most talented saxophonists. Full program details can be downloaded here.
