New clarinet support wins award

This article was posted on 23 Jul 2017.

A new product designed and made by clarinet maker and repairer Daniel Bangham has been given an award for enabling access to music for the physically disabled. The product is called the Claritie and is designed to hold a clarinet in the correct playing position without putting any pressure on the thumb, enabling those with arthritis or strain injuries to play comfortably. The award was given on 1 July by the OHMI Trust, a national music charity for the physically disabled.

The Claritie consists of a polished rosewood rest and steel hanger. It is held in position by a sling around the player’s neck, connected to the hanger, and a hook ring attached between the bell and the bottom joint of the clarinet.

Bangham makes the Claritie by hand at the Cambridge Woodwind Makers (CWM) workshop. CWM is a not-for-profit organisation which is committed to preserving and teaching the skills associated with woodwind instrument making and repairing.
