BBC Young Musician of the Year finalists announced

This article was posted on 3 Feb 2018.

The finalists for the 2018 BBC Young Musician of the Year have been announced.  This year's woodwind final will feature 16 year old Tom Myles from Northern Ireland on the clarinet, and 18 year old Robert Burton from Cambridgeshire on the saxophone.

Tom Myles (clarinet)
Robert Burton (saxophone)

Tom comes from Northern Ireland, where he plays in a number of school ensembles. He enjoys making music in many other places including playing in a pit orchestra, in a Bavarian Strollers band and singing in his school chamber choir. This year Tom is also principal clarinet in the National Youth Orchestra. He’s currently studying for his GCSEs, and he enjoys playing hockey for both his school and club.

Rob comes from a farming family in Cambridgeshire. He has achieved Grade 8 Distinction on clarinet, piano, recorder and saxophone. He started playing the saxophone at the age of nine and is currently at the Royal Academy of Music, studying classical saxophone with Simon Haram. Rob spends the rest of his time drawing, walking his two dogs, visiting coffee shops and eating almond croissants.

The category finals will be held in Birmingham on Sunday 18th March and will broadcast on BBC television later in the Spring.
