Ssaxophonist Robert Burton has won the BBC Young Musician of the Year Woodwind FInal. He goes forward to compete in the semi final with the piano, percussion, strings, and brass category winners. Robert who studies at the Royal Academy of Music, played a program of Fitkin, Creston, and Piazzolla in the woodwind final.

Robert who has been a member of CASSGB since the age of 11, also progressed to the grand concerto final alongisde cellist Maxim Calver and pianist Lauren Zhang. In the final he chose to play the rarely performed saxophone concerto by Paul Creston. The eventual winner of the 2018 Young Musician of the Year was 16 year old  Lauren Zhang who performed the Prokofiev 2nd piano concerto.

Rob comes from a farming family in Cambridgeshire. He has achieved Grade 8 Distinction on clarinet, piano, recorder and saxophone. He started playing the saxophone at the age of nine. Rob spends the rest of his time drawing, walking his two dogs, visiting coffee shops and eating almond croissants.
