Saxophonist Xhosa Cole wins the 2018 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year

Congratulations to saxophonist Xhosa Cole who has won the 2018 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year Award!

Handsworth-born Cole is an emerging talent on Birmingham’s jazz and contemporary music scene. While in sixth form, he attended courses with the National Youth Jazz Collective and National Youth Wind Orchestra and has played in the Jazzlines Ensemble, Birmingham Schools Symphony Orchestra and Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra. In addition to performing a wide range of improvised and notated music, he is rapidly establishing himself as a prominent writer/composer around Birmingham and writes commissions for the Ideas of Noise Festival.

Hosted by the EFG London Jazz Festival, this year's final took place on Saturday 24 November at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, presented by Josie d’Arby and saxophonist Yolanda Brown. All finalists were tasked with playing a set of music that includes at least one piece they have written or arranged themselves. During the final, they performed with professional jazz musicians Paula Gardiner (bass), Asaf Sirkis (drums) and Gwilym Simcock (piano), who also mentored each of the competitors. This year's judges were: Monty Alexander (piano), Zoe Rahman (piano), Gary Crosby (bass), Zara McFarlane (singer) and Iain Ballamy (saxophone).
