New Phoenix Saxophone Orchestra rises in Leicestershire

This article was posted on 27 Jan 2020.

A new saxophone orchestra has launched in Market Harborough, Leicestershire to provide adults with an opportunity to have fun playing the saxophone together and to share the versatility of the sax with a wider audience.

The Phoenix Saxophone Orchestra is starting off with 12 members playing seven different types of sax – sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass and contrabass.

Between them, the members of this new orchestra have masses of experience playing with other sax groups, ensembles, orchestras, jazz, swing and many other types of band in the UK and, indeed, all over Europe.

Jane Smith, who is a founder member of the Phoenix Saxophone Orchestra, said: “We are really excited to be launching this new orchestra. Playing the sax is great fun, and it’s even better when you get to do it with a crowd of like-minded people! What’s particularly good about Phoenix is that we have players with different levels of musical ability, but we all work together to support and help each other develop our musical skills. We are a friendly and supportive bunch, and we make a great sound too. So why not come along and join us?”

Led by a highly experienced musical director, Tony Rifugiato, the orchestra will be playing a wide variety of music, from traditional folk songs, modern pop and rock, to film music, jazz and classical works.

The group meets every other Sunday morning at the Village Hall in Great Bowden, Market Harborough, Leicestershire. Phoenix is keen for new members to join them, so if you’re aged 18 or over, play the saxophone to a minimum grade 5 standard and can read music, why not get in touch? You’ll get your first two rehearsals for free with no commitment, so you really can ‘try before you buy’.
