Wind Instruments do not present a major risk of projection of the COVID-19 virus

This article was posted on 3 Jul 2020.

"During the last 3 months we've heard everything," says Jérôme Perrod, President of the Buffet Crampon Group.

The arts industry remains strongly affected by the coronavirus epidemic. It is even worse for wind instruments simply because the intuitive perception of the risk of contamination is totally contrary to the actual reality. It is nevertheless this perception that guides the directions taken in the name of an implicit precautionary principle.

Fortunately, scientific studies are underway to remove all doubts about the projection of the virus when using a wind instrument. The latest German study on the risks related to the use of voice and wind instruments is both very complete and detailed. The study offers a scientific analysis that rules on the recommended distance of 1.5 meters. The use of protection could reduce this distance.

A similar study is underway at the University of Colorado, in order to give the real risks of propagation of the virus in music schools and concert halls.
