Congratulations to Matt Carmichael (22, Glasgow) and Alex Clarke (20, Cheshire) for flying the single-reed flag in the final of the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2020. Each of the five finalists presented a 15-minute set live with a house band at London's Cadogan Hall, with each set including at least one piece composed or arranged by the finalists themselves.
In the end, it was pianist Deschanel Gordon (21, Hackney) who was named overall winner of the biannual competition, but there's no doubt the future is bright for Alex, Matt and all of the talented finalists! Although no audience could attend due to the lockdown, the event was broadcast on BBC4 and is available to rewatch on BBC iPlayer.
