Yamaha releases three new baritone saxophones

This article was posted on 9 Mar 2021.

Yamaha has unveiled three new baritone saxophone models: the YBS-480, YBS-62II and YBS-82.

The YBS-82 is the first baritone sax to join Yamaha’s Custom range, adding a new highend professional option to its baritone line-up. Priced around £9,650, the instrument features a new shorter, one-piece bell designed to enhance intonation and response in all registers, while also making the instrument lighter. It is supplied with a C1 neck, aimed to offer fast response for precise phrasing and a well-defined, versatile tone. Optional necks are also available in 18 variations to suit different playing and tonal preferences. The YBS-62II is the new version of the YBS-62, which was Yamaha’s flagship baritone prior to the introduction of the 82 Custom model. Priced around £7,300, the 62II benefits from many of the improved design features of the higher-priced 82 model, including new key layout and peg design. It also features a shorter bell – but a two-piece design rather than the one-piece bell of the YBS-82. The instrument is supplied with the Yamaha ‘62 style’ neck, similar to the previous model.

Marketed as an intermediate instrument, the YBS-480 replaces the old YBS-32 baritone, bringing it in line with the numbering system of Yamaha’s other saxophone models at this price point. Although the cheapest of the three new models, it benefits from many improvements to be found on the more expensive options. Prices start from around £5,500.
