Sophie Alour awarded Django Reinhardt Prize

Saxophonist and composer Sophie Alour has won the prestigious 2020 Django Reinhardt Prize, awarded annually by the French Jazz Academy to the best French jazz musician of the year.

Last year, the 47-year-old released her seventh solo album, Joy, bringing together jazz musicians from the Middle East, including percussionist Wassim Halal and Egyptian oud player and singer Mohamed Abozekry. The disc was nominated for
Album of the Year at Les Victoires du Jazz 2020, another set of French jazz awards separate to the French Jazz Academy.

Alongside her solo projects, Alour plays with Christophe Dal Sasso’s Big Band, also nominated in Les Victoires du Jazz 2020 for Group of the Year. Her other credits include performing in Wynton Marsalis’s big band and Rhoda Scott’s Lady Quartet.
