Matt Carmichael sweeps the board

This article was posted on 1 Sep 2021.

Scottish jazz saxophonist Matt Carmichael, a finalist in the 2020 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year, has become the first student on the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland jazz course to win all three awards the course presents at the end of the academic year.

The 22-year-old, who released his first album Where Will the River Flow in March, was awarded the RCS George Duncan Prize for Jazz Composition for the album’s title track; the Fog Arts prize for Jazz Improvisation; and the Joe Temperley Prize for Jazz Arranging for his orchestration of Stompin’ at the Savoy, made famous by clarinettist and bandleader Benny Goodman.

Following an enthusiastic reception for his debut album from the European media, the WDR Big Band in Cologne has commissioned its chief conductor, the American saxophonistarranger Bob Mintzer, to orchestrate Carmichael’s debut album in its entirety. The young Scotsman has been invited to appear as lead soloist when the new arrangement is broadcast by WDR next March.
