Jazz FM Awards 2021

This article was posted on 14 Oct 2021.

The nominees for this year’s Jazz FM Awards have been announced, celebrating music created and released by jazz artists from the UK and abroad from January 2020 to the end of May 2021. This year’s awards ceremony will take place at Under The Bridge in West London on 28 October and will also be livestreamed online.

81-year-old American alto saxophonist Gary Bartz (pictured left) has been nominated in the International Jazz Act of the Year category. Now in the seventh decade of his prolific career, Bartz released a new album in March 2021 entitled Gary Bartz JID006 on the Jazz Is Dead label, which followed his collaboration with London-based collective Maisha on Night Dreamer’s Direct to Disc Sessions in May 2020.

Promises, a collaboration between the prominent American free jazz figure Pharoah Sanders, British electronic musician and composer Floating Points (Sam Shepherd) and the London Symphony Orchestra, has been nominated for Album of the Year. Released in March 2021 on Luaka Bop, the album consists of a single musical composition written by Shepherd divided into nine movements. The LSO’s players recorded their parts remotely during the pandemic, using over one hundred mics simultaneously.

Also nominated for Album of the Year is Source, the widely-acclaimed debut album from Nubya Garcia. Released on Concord Records in August 2020, the disc was also recently nominated for a Mercury Prize and Parliamentary Jazz Award, and it has certainly helped to spark a rapid rise to fame of the Camden-born saxophonist. As reported in our last e-newsletter, her headline concert from this year’s BBC Proms is still available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
