Norwegian jazz saxophonist and composer Marius Neset will take centre stage at this year’s BBC Proms, performing the world premiere of his hour-long piece GEYSER alongside his own quintet and the London Sinfonietta on Saturday 3 September at the Royal Albert Hall.
The 34-year-old first collaborated with the London Sinfonietta back in 2015, and this BBC commission is the third work he has composed for the orchestra. (If you’d like to learn more about these early collaborations, check out his cover interview in the autumn 2019 issue of Clarinet & Saxophone).
Elsewhere, British saxophonist Soweto Kinch has been named as a featured soloist in a prom showcasing the South African jazz songbook, which takes place on Sunday 28 August.
But sadly there are no clarinet soloists this year (although apologies if we missed one when scrolling through the 72-concert list!), but as ever, they’ll be plenty of great single-reed talent on display across the season, which this year runs from 15 July to 10 September.
One interesting headline you might have missed from last week’s launch is that for the first time in Proms history, there will be Proms taking place in every UK nation, including concerts in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool and Truro. The majority of Proms go on sale on Saturday 21 May 2022 at 9am.
