Pro Case 'Pro Pac' contoured alto saxophone case: Pro Case 'Pro Pac' contoured alto saxophone case
There are two types of saxophonist – those who have forgotten to fasten their cases, sending valuable instruments on horizontal trajectories, and those who are going to do this. Admittedly alcohol frequently plays a part in such mishaps, but I have always been wary of zipped cases; the quick-lock Velcro flap on Pro Tec’s latest offering precludes this contingency.
I exchanged my out of production BAM moulded case for the Contoured Alto Saxophone Pro Pac Case for the duration of the World Saxophone Congress in St Andrews, and my beloved saxophone did not suffer any consequences. Surprisingly, the body of the case is wooden, rather than moulded plastic, with a padded nylon cover. The moulded interior, with mouthpiece and neck compartments, is soft and accommodating. The case’s major selling points are its size and the amount of storage; there is even room for a flute case. Although it comes with a padded shoulder strap the backpack accessory is a must for anyone carrying it into college on a daily basis.
The case is well made and durable, with some useful additional features – an organiser for accessories, an optional waterproof cover, and a handle on the top for confined spaces. It looks very smart, although some musicians will doubtless be unwilling to sacrifice their scuffed and be-stickered bags for something more corporate. It has the advantage of actually looking like a saxophone case, so the risk of tedious explanations to drunks on late night transport is reduced.
