12 set pieces for saxophone and piano

Chris Gumbley, Alan Bullard and Karen Street
Gumbles Publications

Those in the saxophone fraternity will be familiar with the names of Chris Gumbley, Alan Bullard and Karen Street. All three have given us a huge amount of repertoire over the years to enjoy ourselves, share with our students and perform to our audiences. This latest release from Gumbles Publications is a fine collection of pieces by all three composers, compiled by Chris Gumbley.

Beautifully presented and clearly written, these pieces cover a variety of styles: classical, swing, rock, Latin and waltzes. Using friendly keys and ranges, the pieces progressively explore many interesting rhythms, patterns, time signatures and styles. Articulation is clearly shown and there is plenty of musical phrasing and dynamic markings to explore.

The pieces start around Grade 1 level and progress to Grade 5, with five of the 12 pieces appearing on the repertoire lists for various grades on the new ABRSM woodwind syllabus. The piano accompaniments complement the solo lines well, supporting the lesser experienced soloist and aiding in a sense of style.

The football theme of the book is extremely creative, as are the titles of each piece. Titles include: ‘Kick off!’, ‘Mexican Wave’ and ‘Man of the Match’. I particularly liked the last piece of the set, ‘Extra Time’ – perhaps the encore?

This collection is bound to enthuse even the most sport-crazy young saxophone student to practise their instrument as much as they play their sport! It’s a very welcome addition to the repertoire and should be in every saxophone teacher’s library. Both E flat and B flat versions of the book are available.
